Comparing a combat sports promotion to the Apollo 11 mission, Secretary of State Marco Rubio framed the upcoming UFC Freedom 250 event as a testament to American audacity. The fight card, scheduled for the White House South Lawn this Sunday, marks a centerpiece of the nation’s 250th-birthday festivities.

Rubio invoked the legacy of President Kennedy’s lunar challenge during an event on Thursday, positioning the UFC as a modern iteration of American exceptionalism. He lauded the organization as a "United Nations of Fighting," noting the diversity of its international athlete roster and the multicultural composition of its fan base. The Secretary’s comments arrive as preparations intensify on the South Lawn, where crews are erecting an octagon cage and thousands of seats.

UFC chief executive Dana White stated the event carries a $30 million price tag, dismissing critics who might view the spectacle as overtly political. Instead, White described the investment as a patriotic gesture aimed at honoring the country’s semiquincentennial. Beyond the South Lawn, the promotion plans to facilitate a massive public gathering at the nearby Ellipse, utilizing large-scale screens to accommodate an estimated 85,000 free-ticket holders.
