New Mexico Hospital Network Crippled by Cyberattack

Ambulances were diverted and critical emergency services suspended across New Mexico on Monday after the University of New Mexico Health System suffered a significant cyberattack. The breach forced the closure of over 30 clinics and shuttered the state’s only Level 1 trauma center, leaving patients scrambling for care.

The disruption began Monday morning when employees reported alarming on-screen messages claiming that sensitive student, employee, and patient data had been exfiltrated. While the health system began a phased restoration of services by late afternoon, the immediate impact left Albuquerque residents without access to their primary emergency department. Nearby providers, including Presbyterian Healthcare Services and Lovelace Health System, stepped in to absorb the overflow of patients redirected from the UNM network.

Security experts note the sophistication of the intrusion, with Tufts University professor Josephine Wolff describing the direct messaging to staff computers as an unusual and aggressive tactic. While the FBI confirmed it is assisting with an active investigation, the health system remains tight-lipped regarding the specific nature of the breach. The incident highlights the persistent vulnerability of critical medical infrastructure, as academic and clinical operations at the UNM Health Sciences Center remain suspended until Tuesday.
