WMO Secretary General Celeste Saulo stated that if the current warming trajectory continues, the event will exceed any observations since systematic monitoring began four decades ago. While the peak is expected toward the end of 2026, the atmospheric consequences are projected to ripple into 2027, disrupting rainfall and temperature cycles on a global scale.
The human cost is already mounting in tropical regions, where the current cycle has contributed to a severe food crisis across Central America’s Dry Corridor. Agricultural sectors, alongside water, energy, and health systems, now face heightened risks as the climate anomaly intensifies. In response, the WMO is coordinating with United Nations agencies to bolster early warning systems and climate data distribution to vulnerable nations.
This prolonged duration presents a unique challenge for international disaster preparedness. By identifying a clear window of persistence, the organization aims to shift the focus from mere prediction to active mitigation of climate-sensitive risks. The upcoming peak serves as a critical test for global resilience against a climate phenomenon that amplifies existing vulnerabilities in food production and essential infrastructure.
