Priyank Kharge Defends Rahul Gandhi Amid Haldwani Ritual Controversy

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge has condemned the registration of an FIR against Rahul Gandhi, arguing that authorities are targeting a political leader for highlighting a constitutional breach rather than addressing the alleged illegality of a controversial ritual performed in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani.

The legal action stems from a complaint filed on August 30 at the Haldwani Police Station, where a member of the Scheduled Caste community alleged that Gandhi’s criticism of a ‘shuddhikaran yajna’ insulted their sentiments. Police have invoked the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act alongside provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The ritual in question occurred at Ramlila Ground following a Congress rally, with Gandhi characterizing the event as an act of untouchability.

Organizers maintain the ritual was a cleanliness drive intended to restore the venue's sanctity, explicitly denying any discriminatory intent. Amid the fallout, Priyank Kharge dismissed the criminal case as a misdirected effort to silence critique. He further challenged the BJP over its ongoing padyatra in Karnataka, urging the opposition to instead focus on transparency regarding recruitment irregularities within the Karnataka Public Service Commission and persistent government job vacancies.
