Dr. Jemimah Njuki, the African Development Bank’s Director for Gender, Women and Civil Society, argues that gender equality is a prerequisite for continental resilience. The Bank’s strategy now pivots toward systemic change, moving away from isolated projects to a comprehensive Gender Action Plan for 2027–2031. This framework aims to integrate women into infrastructure, labor markets, and economic policy rather than treating their participation as a peripheral social issue.

Central to this shift is the Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa (AFAWA) initiative. By partnering with over 200 financial institutions, AFAWA has already mobilized $3.1 billion of its $5 billion target. These funds are designed to bypass the traditional lending barriers that often exclude women-owned enterprises. Beyond mere capital, the initiative incorporates mentorship and policy reform to ensure that businesses can scale within the formal economy.

Progress remains particularly difficult in conflict-affected regions like Sudan, where standard financial systems are often absent. The Bank’s response there has linked cash assistance with protection and legal aid, reaching over 95,000 women. By connecting financial empowerment with safety and justice, development institutions are attempting to reach those who have been most excluded from Africa’s economic growth, viewing their inclusion as a vital engine for future stability.
