Police arrived at the scene around 9 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. According to investigators, an unidentified suspect wearing a paintball-style mask, grey hoodie, and jeans entered the store, brandished a weapon, and demanded cash. After securing the money from an employee, the gunman fired multiple shots, striking Patel, who stood alongside his 19-year-old daughter. A 70-year-old employee also sustained injuries during the struggle, suffering a broken wrist.

Patel, originally from the Aakhaj village in Gujarat’s Mehsana district, had lived in the United States for nearly three decades. He had moved to Jackson from Chicago, opening the shop only a week before the attack. The Jackson Police Department has released surveillance images showing the suspect fleeing in a white sedan and is currently seeking information from the public to identify the gunman. The news of his death has deeply shaken his home village, where residents have expressed growing anxiety regarding the safety of Indian nationals working in the U.S.
