US Advisory Body Pushes for Sanctions Against RSS Ahead of New York Visit

USCIRF chair Asif Mahmood cited the group’s alleged role in attacks against religious minorities, including Christians and Muslims, as the primary justification for the move. Commissioner Gene Mills echoed these sentiments, arguing that the US government must prioritize accountability for those responsible for violations of religious freedom. The commission has previously labeled the RSS as an umbrella organization linked to systemic issues, further recommending that India be designated a country of particular concern.

New Delhi has consistently dismissed these allegations. External Affairs Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal described the commission’s reports as distorted and selective, arguing that they rely on ideological narratives rather than the reality of India’s multicultural society. The Indian government has countered by suggesting the USCIRF focus on the rise of vandalism targeting Hindu temples and the intimidation of the Indian diaspora within the United States. While the commission remains an influential independent agency providing policy recommendations to the President and Congress, it holds no legislative power to enact these sanctions unilaterally.
