Congress MP Pawan Khera led the pushback by questioning the historical contributions of the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh to India’s independence movement. He insisted that the party will continue to sing only the first two stanzas of the anthem, a practice established by the Congress Working Committee nearly nine decades ago. According to Khera, these traditions align with the principles held by historical figures including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Beyond the procedural debate, the discourse turned personal. Khera accused the BJP of distorting the legacy of national icons by aligning itself with ideologies historically linked to Nathuram Godse. Amarinder Singh Raja Warring supported this position, alleging a deliberate attempt by the BJP to manipulate historical records for political gain. While KC Venugopal characterized the friction as a simple communication gap, he maintained that the party remains steadfast in its refusal to yield to pressure from Prime Minister Narendra Modi or Home Minister Amit Shah, dismissing the BJP’s claims of disrespect as groundless.
