Congress Leaders Honor Rajiv Gandhi on 82nd Birth Anniversary

Top Congress officials gathered at Veer Bhumi on Thursday to commemorate the 82nd birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. While the event served as a solemn tribute to the architect of India’s IT transformation, the occasion also sparked a sharp rebuke of recent political criticism from the BJP.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury used the ceremony to reflect on his own political origins, tracing his entry into the Congress party back to 1991 under Gandhi’s tenure. Beyond the tributes, he addressed claims regarding the party’s stance on Vande Mataram, which the BJP has characterized as appeasement politics. Chowdhury rejected these allegations, citing the party’s historical adherence to a 1937 resolution as evidence of its consistent ideological position.

Sonia Gandhi joined senior party members, including Ashok Gehlot, to pay respects at the memorial. The gathering highlighted the enduring influence of the late leader, whose career was cut short by his 1991 assassination, leaving behind a legacy defined by his push for technological modernization across India.
