ADB Launches $5 Million Fund for Micronesian Women Entrepreneurs

The Asian Development Bank has finalized a $5 million financing package with the Federated States of Micronesia Development Bank to boost local small businesses. By mandating that half of the funds support women-led enterprises, the initiative aims to dismantle the systemic credit barriers that have long hindered female business owners across the islands.

This agreement marks the first private sector project for the Asian Development Bank in the Federated States of Micronesia. Beyond simple capital injection, the collaboration pairs a $4 million loan with a $1 million grant to provide both lending capacity and technical assistance. The project addresses the reality that many female entrepreneurs in the region are often categorized as high-risk borrowers due to limited collateral and inadequate credit infrastructure.

To bridge this gap, the FSMDB will launch specialized financial products tailored to women, moving away from conventional lending models. The initiative also includes mandatory training for at least 250 business owners to improve financial literacy and operational management. Aziz Haydarov, ADB North Pacific Advisor, noted that empowering these entrepreneurs serves as a catalyst for broader economic resilience, impacting households and local communities. The package further supports the digitization of the FSMDB’s internal loan monitoring systems, ensuring the institution can manage its $49.7 million portfolio with greater efficiency as it expands its reach into sectors like tourism, agriculture, and fisheries.
