The underlying dispute stems from a 1996 encounter in a New York department store dressing room, which a civil jury later determined constituted sexual assault and defamation. After the allegations surfaced in Carroll’s 2019 book, the former president publicly labeled her a “nut job” and insisted the claims were fabricated.

Financial consequences for the former president remain significant. Records confirm he transferred $5.6 million to Carroll last month to satisfy the first judgment. However, the legal battle is far from over. A separate New York defamation case resulted in an $83.3 million judgment against him, a ruling that is currently moving through the appeals process toward the Supreme Court.
