Southport killer faces new charges following prison assaults

Axel Rudakubana, the teenager serving a life sentence for the 2024 Southport knife attacks, has been charged with multiple assaults on prison staff. The 19-year-old, currently held at the Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital, faces allegations of attempted grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon within the facility.

Rudakubana was previously sentenced to a minimum of 52 years for the murders of Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event. The July 2024 attack also left 10 others wounded and ignited widespread civil unrest across the United Kingdom.

Metropolitan Police confirmed the new charges relate to incidents occurring in May 2025, involving assaults on emergency workers. Rudakubana is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on September 11. Families of the victims have publicly criticized his recent transfer to Broadmoor, characterizing the move as an attempt to manipulate the penal system.
