Hyderabad police name Meta India head in case over Modi videos

Deputy Commissioner of Police V. Aravind Babu confirmed that authorities are preparing to issue a formal notice to Meta Platforms. The decision to name a senior executive personally is an unusual escalation in India, where authorities have recently tightened regulations to force technology companies to remove flagged content within three hours or lose their legal liability protection. While legal experts suggest that personal culpability typically requires evidence of an active role in content management, the move signals a shift in how Indian officials approach global tech executives.

Meta has faced recurring friction with the government over its oversight of Facebook and Instagram, its largest market by user base. Tensions peaked this week after the IT ministry summoned company executives to explain why a post by the Prime Minister addressing student protesters was briefly restricted. A Meta spokesperson attributed that incident to an inadvertent error, though supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party continue to file complaints alleging that the platform facilitates the spread of manipulated imagery targeting the Prime Minister. Srinivas, who assumed his role in July 2025, has not yet publicly addressed the filing.
