China Expands Pacific Coast Guard Patrols Near Taiwan

The Chinese vessels Xiushan and Chongming were tracked operating 43 to 151 nautical miles off Orchid Island. Jiang Lue, a spokesperson for the Chinese coast guard, stated that the Xiushan task group has been intensifying its presence in the region since July to ensure navigation security. In response, Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration dispatched the patrol ship Taipei to monitor the movements, labeling the operation "fake law enforcement" and a direct threat to national sovereignty.

This shift in activity toward Taiwan’s Pacific coast—a strategic corridor vital for potential wartime supply lines—has heightened concerns among Western allies. The friction follows a rare public disclosure by the United States, which recently publicized joint coordination between the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Midgett and Taiwanese counterparts. Despite Beijing's insistence that its actions are lawful, Taipei maintains that such maneuvers are part of an ongoing attempt to exert control over the democratically governed island.
