The Climate Proof Water4Food Project focuses on infrastructure and human capital to mitigate environmental instability. Construction plans include seven solar-powered water supply systems and integrated flood management, paired with sanitation upgrades for schools and public institutions. By empowering women-led committees to oversee these resources, the project shifts the burden of water management to local hands.

Beyond infrastructure, the program targets economic diversification for 100,000 farmers and 19,300 youths. Training in climate-smart agriculture, seed distribution, and value-chain entrepreneurship aims to turn subsistence farming into a more resilient trade. Mecuria Assefaw, the African Development Bank Group’s Regional Manager, emphasized that these challenges ignore national borders, necessitating a unified strategy between Ethiopia and South Sudan to manage shared climate risks.

Restoration efforts will run parallel to these social programs, involving large-scale tree planting and watershed rehabilitation to repair degraded land. By fostering cross-border technical cooperation, the project seeks to establish a sustainable framework for water and food security that persists long after the initial investment is exhausted.
