The Philippine Coast Guard reported that the Chinese vessel scored an indirect hit on the fisheries ship during what Manila identified as a humanitarian mission. Spokesperson Jay Tarriela stated that the maneuver violated the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, asserting that the aggressive tactics directly endangered personnel on board the Filipino vessel.

Beijing dismissed these claims, with its coast guard maintaining that the operation was a standard, lawful response to the illegal entry of Philippine ships into waters surrounding the feature, which China refers to as Huangyan Dao. This clash follows a similar confrontation at the Second Thomas Shoal earlier this week, further complicating the atmosphere at the ASEAN summits. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned that Manila risks severe consequences should it continue what Beijing characterizes as provocative actions supported by external actors. As both nations exchange diplomatic protests, the recurring incidents underscore a hardening stalemate in one of the world's most contested waterways.
