Speaker Sanctions Shiv Sena Merger as Opposition Ranks Splinter

Six rebel lawmakers from the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction officially crossed the floor on Saturday, joining the party wing led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The move, sanctioned by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, reshapes the parliamentary arithmetic and signals a deepening fracture within the opposition ranks.

The defection bolsters the Shinde-led Shiv Sena to 13 seats in the Lok Sabha, effectively draining the UBT faction of its legislative weight. Beyond the Shiv Sena, the chamber saw further volatility as 20 members of the Trinamool Congress declared their move to the Nationalist Citizens Party of India. While the Speaker has granted these defectors separate seating, the formal recognition of this second merger remains pending.

These shifts provide a strategic tailwind to the National Democratic Alliance, moving the coalition toward a more commanding majority. Observers suggest this consolidated strength could accelerate the government’s legislative agenda, specifically targeting the Constitution Amendment Bill. The proposed legislation seeks to expand the total number of Lok Sabha seats while codifying enhanced representation for women in legislative bodies.
