Punjab Lawmakers Face Pressure Over Anti-Sacrilege Legislation

As tensions rise over the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, AAP MP Malwinder Singh Kang has pledged allegiance to the directives of the Sri Akal Takht Sahib. The move follows widespread criticism regarding the lack of consultation in drafting the contentious new religious legislation.

Punjab Lawmakers Face Pressure Over Anti-Sacrilege Legislation

The Sri Akal Takht Sahib remains the ultimate authority for Sikhs globally, and its influence now sits at the center of Punjab’s political friction. Lawmakers are currently preparing to present their stances on the 2026 amendment, an act that has drawn fire for its perceived procedural opacity. Kang insisted that party members respect these traditional edicts, even as the legislative proposal continues to trigger intense public debate.

Opposition voices are framing the discourse as a cynical power play. Congress leader Pargat Singh has publicly accused both the Aam Aadmi Party and the central government of weaponizing sacrilege cases for political gain. Drawing comparisons to the previous farm law disputes, Singh alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Arvind Kejriwal are employing coordinated divisive tactics to push through the agenda championed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
