Qbuzz Secures €140 Million for Dutch Electric Bus Fleet Expansion

The European Investment Bank has finalized a €70 million loan to operator Qbuzz, matching a €70 million commitment from Société Générale to overhaul public transit in the Dutch province of Zuid-Holland. This €140 million financing package replaces aging diesel buses with a high-capacity electric fleet and supporting grid infrastructure.

The investment targets the Zuid-Holland Noord concession area, covering key cities such as Leiden, Alphen aan den Rijn, and Gouda. Beyond purchasing the vehicles, the funding supports the installation of specialized charging facilities and electrical connections to the national grid. This infrastructure is critical for maintaining the operational efficiency of one of the Netherlands' most expansive zero-emission transport networks.

EIB Head of Office Chantal Schrijver noted that the project aligns with broader European goals for energy independence and climate mitigation. The initiative has already gained international traction; Qbuzz Chief Financial Officer Angelo De Carlo reported that delegations from nations including Japan, Kenya, India, and several European countries have visited to study the Dutch implementation model. Despite the technical complexities of scaling zero-emission infrastructure, the project serves as a blueprint for regional authorities aiming to shift commuters away from private vehicle reliance.
