Tehran Struggles to Manage Image Amidst Leadership Speculation

The Basij Organisation plans to release footage of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei to quell persistent rumors regarding his health and public absence. This move comes as President Masoud Pezeshkian admits that maintaining a consistent channel of communication with the leader remains a complex, fluctuating challenge for his administration.

Pezeshkian recently met with Khamenei to address pressing military and economic concerns as he enters his third year in office. While the President initially suggested that his access to the Supreme Leader was improving, he later walked back those comments, describing the nature of their interactions as difficult. This ambiguity has fueled widespread speculation, particularly since Khamenei has not been seen in public since his appointment in March.

Qasem Qoraishi, deputy of the Basij Organisation, confirmed that the upcoming release of recorded material is designed to dispel doubts about the leadership's stability. By showcasing the Supreme Leader, officials hope to neutralize the counter-narratives currently circulating in the media. The strategy reflects an urgent need to project continuity and control while the administration navigates a period of significant international and domestic uncertainty.
