Balloon Accident Claims Life of Wisconsin Infant Days Before Birthday

Two days before his first birthday, 11-month-old Don’Vayaire Avita-Mays died after an animal-shaped balloon lodged in his esophagus. The tragedy occurred in Wisconsin on October 24, prompting his mother, Kisha Avita-Wilson, to issue a stark warning to parents regarding the hidden risks posed by common party decorations.

The incident unfolded when a balloon came undone, allowing the infant to grab and bite it. The tied-off section of the latex shot into his throat, causing an immediate obstruction. Despite frantic attempts by his mother to perform CPR and clear his airway, the boy turned blue and entered cardiac arrest. First responders arrived shortly after, but their efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Family members remember the boy, known as "Baby Don," as a child whose smile and infectious laugh left a profound impact on those around him. The family has since turned to a GoFundMe campaign for support, noting that the extreme stress of the loss has caused the mother, who is 30 weeks pregnant, to suffer early contractions requiring hospitalization. Health experts continue to emphasize that latex balloons and their fragments represent a severe choking hazard for infants, often requiring constant vigilance during any celebration involving small children.
