Oleshky Ceasefire Expires as Evacuations Conclude

A six-day humanitarian truce in the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky ended at midnight Sunday, leaving 167 civilians evacuated from the Kherson front line. While both sides largely adhered to the agreement, the expiration of the pause leaves residents bracing for a return to heavy shelling along the Dnipro River.

The local ceasefire, brokered through mediation efforts by Melania Trump and Pope Leo, provided a rare window of stability. During the six-day period, approximately 800 people were moved from the conflict zone, with the final group including 22 children and 21 individuals requiring specialized medical assistance. Evacuees heading toward Ukrainian territory faced an arduous journey, traveling by bus to Anapa before flying through Belarus to reach safety.

Despite the end of the truce, officials from both Kyiv and Moscow expressed cautious optimism regarding the diplomatic coordination involved. Human Rights Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets confirmed that communication channels between the two countries remain active, potentially opening doors for future humanitarian corridors. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also characterized the operation as a successful example of bilateral cooperation, though no formal extension has been signed.

Governor Oleksandr Prokudin continues to urge residents to vacate the Dnipro riverbank, citing the persistent intensity of Russian artillery. While the Oleshky arrangement stands as the longest localized pause since the 2022 invasion, broader military operations continue unabated. On Sunday alone, regional authorities reported civilian fatalities in the Sumy and Vinnytsia regions, underscoring the fragility of peace efforts in the absence of a comprehensive political settlement.
