Deutsche Bank Hits Profit Record as DWS Struggles to Convert Inflows

Germany’s largest lender, Deutsche Bank, secured its third consecutive quarter of record profit, reporting 2.6 billion euros in pre-tax earnings for the third quarter of 2026. While the bank’s core lending and wealth management units thrived, its fund subsidiary DWS faced a disconnect between massive asset inflows and actual bottom-line growth.

CEO Christian Sewing attributed the 8 percent rise in pre-tax profit to robust performance across investment banking and corporate services. The investment banking division, the group's primary engine, saw its pre-tax profit climb 12 percent to nearly 1.1 billion euros, bolstered by strong demand in fixed income and corporate financing. Despite these gains, the bank increased its provisions for credit losses to 501 million euros, citing specific risks in Asian corporate exposure and commercial real estate.

Wealth management also showed momentum, with client assets reaching 865 billion euros and 180 new advisers joining the team this year. Bolstered by these results, the bank raised its revenue outlook for 2026, aiming to surpass the previous 33 billion euro target.

In contrast, the fund subsidiary DWS experienced a divergence between growth and profitability. While the firm attracted a record 30.9 billion euros in net inflows during the quarter—pushing total assets under management to 1.221 trillion euros—financial results lagged behind analyst expectations. Revenue rose only 4 percent to 784 million euros, and the cost-income ratio weakened to 58.6 percent. CEO Stefan Hoops downplayed the shortfall, focusing instead on the record-breaking adoption of the Xtrackers ETF brand and the upcoming global rebranding of the fund business to 'Deutsche Asset Management' by March 2027.
