The new venture, Blockstream Consulting Services, aims to provide asset managers and banks with the technical architecture for tokenized assets and confidential settlement. Back argues that the next wave of bitcoin adoption lies in institutional integration, a sector he believes is uniquely suited to the Swiss banking market. Unlike the mass-market retail focus found in larger economies, the Swiss wealth management industry has shown a distinct appetite for integrating digital assets into private portfolios.
Blockstream has long maintained ties to the region, and the establishment of a European hub follows its acquisition of the local startup Elysium Lab. While the technical operations remain centered in Lugano, the company is actively courting clients across the broader Swiss financial landscape. This expansion complements Blockstream’s existing portfolio, which includes the Liquid Network—a layer-two protocol already facilitating the tokenization of Mexican commercial debt—and hardware solutions like the Jade wallet. Addressing persistent rumors regarding his own identity, Back dismissed the theory that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, suggesting that the anonymity surrounding bitcoin’s creator serves as a structural advantage, keeping the protocol decentralized and free from the risks associated with a public corporate leader.
