Oil Prices Surge as Iran Signals Readiness for Asymmetric Conflict

Global energy markets are bracing for volatility as Brent crude hit a five-month high of $113.50 a barrel, fueled by escalating tensions in the Middle East. With Iran’s military chief declaring readiness for asymmetric warfare and reports of vessel damage in the Persian Gulf, traders are discounting recent diplomatic reassurances.

Oil Prices Surge as Iran Signals Readiness for Asymmetric Conflict

Front-month Brent crude futures climbed 0.7% on Friday, marking a 3.3% weekly gain and a third consecutive week of growth. Conversely, U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures saw a marginal rise to $100.24, though they remain on track for a 1.1% weekly decline. The divergence highlights the heightened sensitivity to geopolitical instability in the Strait of Hormuz.

President Donald Trump rejected Iranian claims regarding recent maritime incidents, labeling the reports of strikes and mine encounters as fabrications intended to manipulate oil prices ahead of U.S. midterm elections. Despite this, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps maintained that multiple vessels were damaged in the Persian Gulf. In Saudi Arabia, the situation prompted Saudi Aramco to order staff at its Dhahran headquarters to work remotely, following a series of fatal attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels on infrastructure.
