Botched Execution: The Failed Attempt to Put Christa Pike to Death

Tennessee executioners cycled through ten needles and struggled for over an hour to secure intravenous lines before the attempted execution of Christa Pike on September 30. New court filings detail a harrowing scene where team members repeatedly warned that veins had ruptured during the failed procedure.

Botched Execution: The Failed Attempt to Put Christa Pike to Death

Attorney Randy Spivey, representing Pike, documented a systematic failure to establish reliable access in the prisoner’s arms. The IV team labored from 6:34 pm to 7:13 pm to set the required lines, often ignoring Pike’s own suggestions for viable sites. By 7:07 pm, team members explicitly noted that a vein had "blown," and a needle was retrieved from her arm severely bent. Despite these clear signs of mechanical failure, the team proceeded with the lethal dose of pentobarbital.

Once the drugs were administered at 7:34 pm, Pike reported severe burning and pressure in her arm. She remained conscious and visibly distressed for nearly an hour, exhibiting labored breathing and agitation. Spivey eventually intervened, demanding the execution be halted and medical aid provided. Pike was subsequently hospitalized, placed on a ventilator, and survived after receiving two doses of the drug. This incident has intensified legal challenges regarding Tennessee’s lethal injection protocols, with death row inmates arguing that the state’s current procedures are fundamentally flawed and prone to catastrophic error.
