Speaking at the NDTV World Summit, the retired general argued that AI serves as a tool for precision rather than a decision-maker. He acknowledged that errors have occurred in military theaters across the Middle East and Ukraine, yet insisted these tragedies stem from human choices made within the context of machine-provided data. Petraeus advocated for a model where machines operate strictly under criteria programmed by human commanders.
This perspective contrasts with recent findings from a Bloomberg investigation into the US Central Command. The report suggested that military personnel increasingly rely on the Maven Smart System, developed by Palantir Technologies, to synthesize vast data inputs for complex operations. Some officials reportedly expected the system to automatically flag intelligence inconsistencies, leading to concerns about over-reliance on the software. As the Department of Defense continues to integrate Maven into its core apparatus, the incident at Minab highlights the ongoing friction between automated targeting capabilities and the accountability required for lethal military force.
