The Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports is collaborating with the EIB and the InvestEU Advisory Hub to renovate buildings that currently struggle with rising temperatures and high energy consumption. By selecting schools from diverse climate zones and architectural backgrounds, officials intend to identify the most effective upgrades for local conditions. The program addresses critical needs beyond energy, incorporating fire safety improvements and accessibility upgrades into the renovation process.
Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki noted that the effort expands on the existing "Marietta Giannakou" framework, shifting toward a generation of buildings designed for sustainability. Technical advisers are currently evaluating financial models for these projects, exploring combinations of grants and long-term loans. EIB Vice-President Ioannis Tsakiris emphasized that the initiative aims to make sustainability a tangible part of the daily educational experience rather than a theoretical policy goal. If the pilot succeeds, it will provide the data necessary to scale these improvements across the country, supported by the bank's broader €2 billion lending envelope for sustainable urban development.
