US Mint Issues Controversial $1 Coin Featuring Donald Trump

A gold-finish $1 coin bearing Donald Trump’s likeness hit the market Wednesday, marking a rare departure from the federal tradition that generally prohibits the depiction of living presidents on national currency. The release, timed for America’s 250th anniversary, sparked immediate debate over the intersection of historical commemoration and political branding.

The US Mint launched the 2026 commemorative coin featuring the president’s profile on the obverse and the Great Seal of the United States on the reverse. While federal law typically restricts currency portraits to deceased figures, the Treasury Secretary holds discretionary authority to approve special-issue minting. The design earned clearance from the US Commission of Fine Arts, a body whose members were appointed by Trump himself. The president previously described the proposal as unusual but stated he felt honored by the inclusion.

Collectors can purchase rolls of 25 coins for $61 or bags of 100 for $154.50, with the Mint confirming that some units struck on July 4th include a special anniversary marking. Despite the limited initial stock, which sold out rapidly online, the coins remain legal tender intended for circulation. This release follows a broader pattern of efforts to attach the president’s name to prominent Washington institutions, a trend that has frequently triggered legal challenges and public scrutiny regarding the personalization of government property.
