US consumer confidence slides as inflation fears persist

The erosion of confidence is particularly acute among lower- and middle-income families, older individuals, and those lacking stock market cushions. Joanne Hsu, director of the Surveys of Consumers, noted that the decline reflects a broad-based struggle to absorb persistent price hikes. Both the Current Economic Conditions Index and the Index of Consumer Expectations mirrored this downward trajectory, falling to 51.9 and 51.5 respectively.

While year-ahead inflation expectations dipped slightly to 4 per cent from 4.2 per cent in July, the figure remains significantly elevated compared to the start of the year. Beyond immediate household budgets, anxiety is mounting regarding long-term business conditions. Expectations for the economy over the next year plummeted 10 per cent, while the five-year outlook saw a 13 per cent contraction. Consumers cite a confluence of pressures, ranging from volatile gasoline prices and policy uncertainty to the ongoing impact of the Iran conflict, as primary drivers of this sustained economic malaise.
