Jared Kushner Presses Hamas for Gaza Roadmap Ahead of Netanyahu Talks

Jared Kushner held a rare meeting with Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya in Egypt on Sunday, seeking to revive a 15-point U.S.-backed ceasefire roadmap. The high-stakes diplomatic push arrives as the envoy prepares for a tense Monday session with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has openly rejected the proposed peace plan.

The negotiations focus on a phased transition requiring Hamas to disarm while Israeli forces withdraw from the territory. Despite the urgency of the situation for 2 million Gazans, the process remains deadlocked over fundamental conditions. Hamas has signaled a commitment to the roadmap but demands an immediate halt to hostilities and a retreat of Israeli forces to a vaguely defined boundary, whereas Netanyahu insists on total disarmament before any withdrawal.

Adding to the pressure, a coalition of regional powers including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Jordan issued a joint statement accusing Israel of obstructing the peace process. Netanyahu’s Likud party dismissed this criticism as a politically motivated attempt to influence the upcoming October 27 election. With Israeli forces currently controlling roughly 60 percent of the enclave, the path to implementation hinges on whether Kushner, alongside former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Board of Peace director Nickolay Mladenov, can bridge the widening gap between the opposing sides.
