Johnson & Johnson Proposes $5.5 Billion Talc Litigation Settlement

The New Jersey-based pharmaceutical giant continues to deny any scientific merit to allegations that its products cause cancer. Despite this stance, the company halted sales of talc-based baby powder in the United States and Canada in 2020. A vice president of litigation stated the settlement allows the firm to move past the protracted dispute and refocus on its core mission of developing medical devices and pharmaceuticals.

While this proposal addresses the vast majority of domestic litigation, the company remains entangled in international legal battles. A separate case filed in the United Kingdom in 2025 involves approximately 3,000 complainants seeking compensation estimated at over £1 billion. These plaintiffs allege that long-term use of J&J products led to severe health complications, including ovarian cancer and mesothelioma, mirroring the claims that have burdened the company for years.
