For a voyage lasting roughly one month, the payout represents a life-altering sum for junior ratings, who typically earn around $1,500 monthly. Captains, who hold the ultimate authority on navigation, command significantly higher base salaries of up to $15,000.

While these financial rewards are climbing, the human cost of the route has become increasingly difficult to ignore. Recent fatalities last week and the emergency abandonment of a vessel on Monday have forced a confrontation between profit margins and personal safety. Pradeep Chawla of GlobalMET notes that while many crew members are opting to disembark rather than face the risk, shipping companies are still finding personnel willing to accept the danger for the right price.

Insurance premiums for the corridor have surged as the security situation deteriorates. Although some vessels continue to transit the strait, tracking data has become unreliable.
