Beijing officials labeled the event a result of Manila’s malicious hype, insisting that the Philippines initiated the maneuver that led to the vessels striking one another. Manila pushed back against this narrative, alleging that Chinese forces engaged in aggressive conduct, including a physical strike against a navy staff member during the encounter.
While the Chinese foreign ministry condemned the Philippine actions as egregious, they confirmed that medical supplies were permitted to pass through the area on humanitarian grounds. This narrow window of cooperation does little to mask the deepening rift between the two maritime powers, as both sides remain locked in a cycle of blame regarding territorial sovereignty in the region.
