Maharashtra Launches Committee to Draft Uniform Civil Code

Former Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Desai will lead a newly formed committee tasked with drafting Uniform Civil Code rules for Maharashtra. Announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday, the move signals a push for legal uniformity across marriage, divorce, and inheritance statutes before the state’s winter legislative session.

The seven-member panel brings together a mix of judicial and bureaucratic heavyweights, including former High Court justices RC Chavan and SG Mehere. Former Chief Secretary DK Jain and social activist Padmashri Ramesh Patange also join the group, which is charged with creating a framework that aligns with constitutional Directive Principles.

Fadnavis stated that the government intends to finalize the legislation in time for the upcoming session in Nagpur. This effort mirrors legislative activities in Uttarakhand and Assam, reflecting a broader regional trend toward standardizing personal laws. By following constitutional procedures, the administration aims to establish a consistent legal structure that replaces existing fragmented regulations.
