US-Iran Ceasefire Dissolves Into Open Hostility

Eighty-five missile and drone strikes against US military facilities across the Gulf have effectively buried the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran. President Donald Trump declared the agreement over on Wednesday, ending a brief diplomatic experiment that began with an unexpected signing at the Palace of Versailles.

The collapse follows a violent downward spiral that began shortly after the June 17 agreement. While the memorandum aimed for a permanent cessation of hostilities and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the deal struggled to survive the internal pressures of both nations. Tensions spiked when Iran shuttered the strategic waterway in late June, citing Israeli military operations in Lebanon as a breach of the accord's spirit.

Washington responded to the subsequent targeting of the M/V Ever Lovely by launching widespread airstrikes against Iranian drone storage sites and radar installations. The situation reached a breaking point this week when the US revoked oil-sale waivers and struck over 80 targets inside Iranian territory. Iran’s retaliatory operation against US-linked facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait coincided with the state funeral of Ali Khamenei. President Trump dismissed any possibility of renewed engagement, labeling the Iranian leadership in derogatory terms and signaling a return to open confrontation.
