Kerala Assembly Erupts Over PM SHRI Scheme Implementation

Opposition legislators stormed out of the Kerala Assembly on Wednesday after the Speaker refused to debate the PM Schools for Rising India scheme. The walkout followed a heated standoff between the LDF and the UDF government, centering on accusations of a policy reversal regarding the controversial central education initiative.

Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan spearheaded the protest, labeling the government's current position a shameful surrender. He challenged Education Minister N Samsudheen’s defense, specifically criticizing the decision to form a Cabinet sub-committee to oversee the scheme. According to Vijayan, this move marks a stark departure from the UDF’s pre-election rhetoric and past opposition to the project.

Samsudheen dismissed the criticism by pointing to an existing Memorandum of Understanding. He asserted that the agreement, signed under the previous LDF administration, legally binds the state and limits its ability to withdraw from the program. Despite the government's insistence that the move aligns with Union and Supreme Court directives, the opposition maintains that the administration has abandoned its campaign promises in favor of federal alignment.
