Andrius Kubilius Proposes Integrating Ukraine into EU Defence Union

Ukraine’s battlefield success, driven by a radical transformation of its war doctrine, demands a strategic shift in European security policy. EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius argued Tuesday that integrating Kyiv’s military force into the broader European defence architecture is no longer a peripheral concern, but a vital continental interest.

Speaking at the European Defence and Security summit in Brussels, Kubilius framed the integration of Ukrainian military capabilities as a logical evolution of the current geopolitical climate. He suggested that the bloc must capitalize on the operational experience gained by Ukrainian forces to strengthen the union’s collective posture.

To facilitate this shift, the European Commission is preparing to unveil its initial roadmap for integrating the European defence market as early as next week. This strategy includes a comprehensive analysis of necessary follow-up steps, with specific legislative proposals to overhaul defence procurement rules and broader market regulations expected to follow later this year.
