Narendra Modi honors Syama Prasad Mookerjee on 73rd death anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the 73rd death anniversary of Bharatiya Jan Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee on Tuesday, framing the scholar’s legacy as a cornerstone for modern governance. Mookerjee, who died in Kashmir in 1953, remains a pivotal figure in the ideological lineage of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister described Mookerjee as a distinguished statesman whose conviction and commitment to national interests continue to shape the current political agenda. The BJP marks this date as 'Balidan Diwas' to honor the sacrifice of the man who established the Jana Sangh on October 21, 1951.

Mookerjee’s career spanned the transition from pre-independence politics to the Nehru cabinet. After serving as a minister in the Progressive Coalition Ministry and briefly with the Hindu Mahasabha, he joined Jawaharlal Nehru’s interim government as Minister for Industry and Supply. His most enduring political legacy remains his staunch opposition to Article 370, a policy position that saw fruition when the BJP government repealed the constitutional provision in 2019. In the national capital, local leaders including Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra and Rekha Gupta marked the occasion with floral tributes.
