The declaration follows a violent Saturday where Israeli strikes resulted in at least 20 deaths across Lebanon, according to the state news agency NNA. These fatalities occurred less than 24 hours after the cessation of hostilities between the Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group that had been engaged in months of escalating cross-border violence.
While the ceasefire aims to de-escalate the conflict, the Defence Minister’s statement underscores a policy of active engagement. By maintaining a presence in the security zone, Israel aims to ensure that its military retains the tactical freedom to respond to any perceived breach of security, effectively signaling that the truce does not imply a withdrawal or a surrender of defensive capabilities.
