The public spat intensified after Trump took to his Truth Social platform to allege that Meloni had "begged" for a photo with him, misspelling her name as "Gigiorgia" in the process. Meloni, whose Brothers of Italy party currently leads domestic polls at 28%, dismissed his claims regarding her political standing. She told the U.S. leader that his friendship has offered no benefit to her approval ratings, which have recently climbed to 35%.
Beyond personal barbs, the disagreement highlights a deepening strain over military policy. Trump criticized Rome for restricting the use of U.S. bases in Italy during the ongoing conflict with Iran. Meloni maintained that base operations remain strictly tied to existing bilateral agreements. "As long as I am prime minister, Italy remains a sovereign nation," she stated, asserting that her government would not violate established protocols to accommodate Washington's military demands. Trump’s own approval rating remains stagnant at 36%, according to recent Reuters/Ipsos polling.
