UKPNP Chairman Reports Human Rights Crisis in PoJK to UN Council

Nearly 50 people have died and hundreds more sustained injuries during ongoing civil unrest in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, according to Sardar Shaukat Ali Kashmiri. The UKPNP Chairman delivered this testimony from the sidelines of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, citing a severe crackdown on protesters.

Kashmiri’s delegation briefed international human rights organizations on the escalating conflict, specifically highlighting the activities of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC). He reported that authorities have used excessive force to suppress the movement, which has campaigned for fundamental rights for three years. Among the allegations is the withholding of victims' bodies from grieving families and the targeting of prominent activists, including the fatal attack on an associate of Umar Nazir.

Beyond political suppression, the region faces mounting humanitarian strain. Kashmiri noted that blockades and restricted transport routes in areas like Rawalakot and Kotli have severely disrupted the supply of food and essential commodities. The inclusion of JAAC members in Pakistan’s Fourth Schedule has further curtailed political participation. International groups briefed in Geneva emphasized that these grievances require urgent, meaningful dialogue rather than the current cycle of state-imposed restrictions and violence.
