India gears up for the 12th International Yoga Day

Floating sessions on Srinagar’s lakes and 24-hour countdowns in Hyderabad mark the final push toward the 12th International Day of Yoga on June 21. This year’s theme, Yoga for Healthy Ageing, underscores the practice as a universal tool for maintaining independence and vitality across all generations.

Across the country, local administrations are hosting diverse events to build momentum for Sunday’s global celebration. In Telangana, Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy and Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla led a massive 24-hour countdown at Hyderabad’s Parade Grounds. Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir administration held a mega session at Sanasar, while water sports athletes demonstrated floating yoga at Pokhribal Lake in Srinagar.

Public participation remains high in urban centers. Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak joined a significant camp at Lucknow’s KD Singh Babu Stadium, framing the practice as a vital path to mental and physical clarity. In Goa, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant opened the Sanyog ISM Yoga Summit 2026, centering discussions on the medicinal and longevity benefits of the discipline.

Since the United Nations General Assembly adopted the observance in 2014, the June 21 event has evolved into a centerpiece of India’s cultural diplomacy. This year, the focus shifts toward the intersection of ancient tradition and modern geriatric health, encouraging citizens to integrate yoga into their daily routines for long-term well-being.
