The Bar Standards Board confirmed the suspension is effective immediately, with a formal panel hearing scheduled within four weeks to determine the next steps. Khan, who denies all wrongdoing, has maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings. Supporters of the prosecutor argue that these allegations are politically motivated, surfacing specifically after he pursued arrest warrants for Israeli officials regarding the conflict in Gaza.
The ICC’s 125 member states are set to convene on July 24 to decide his future at the institution. This internal turmoil coincides with intense international pressure, as the United States—which is not an ICC member—has already imposed sanctions on various court officials, including Khan, over investigations into U.S. operations in Afghanistan and the actions of Israeli leadership. An external United Nations investigation, which spanned 18 months, concluded that there was a factual basis for the claims brought by a female aide. While Khan has pledged to challenge the disciplinary actions through all available legal channels, his duties have been managed by his deputies since he took voluntary leave in May 2025.
