President Lee Demands Radical Overhaul of South Korean Election Body

Labeling recent ballot-paper shortages as absurd, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has demanded a total dismantling and reconstruction of the National Election Commission. The call follows widespread public outrage and the resignation of the commission’s chief after the June 3 local elections were marred by logistical failure.

The President has ordered a joint probe involving prosecutors and police to investigate the administrative lapses that fueled protests over electoral fairness. Lee argued that the commission has operated with excessive autonomy, enjoying freedom close to indulgence without facing necessary oversight. He suggested that if political consensus can be reached, the government should consider a constitutional amendment to redefine the body’s mandate and ensure accountability commensurate with its required neutrality.

While pushing for institutional reform, Lee addressed the civil unrest surrounding the election results. He urged authorities to maintain a firm stance against violence occurring during protests, while simultaneously maintaining that the right to peaceful assembly must remain protected. The commission, historically a constitutionally independent entity, now faces the prospect of a legislative overhaul intended to restore public trust in the country's voting infrastructure.
