Speaking to the Taiwan Foreign Correspondents' Club in Taipei, Lai emphasized that maintaining a democratic way of life should not be misinterpreted as a provocation. While Beijing continues to label him a separatist and dismisses his overtures for dialogue, Lai maintained that only the Taiwanese people hold the authority to determine their future. He pointed to China’s expanding military footprint in the Western Pacific as the primary driver of regional tension.
The administration remains focused on securing defense assets despite shifting rhetoric from Washington. Following comments by President Donald Trump characterizing potential arms sales as a negotiating chip, Lai stressed that Taiwan’s commitment to self-defense remains ironclad. The government is now moving to bypass previous legislative hurdles by proposing a T$210 billion ($6.66 billion) special package dedicated to surveillance technology, coastal defense, and unmanned surface drones. This push for increased capability is intended to demonstrate a credible deterrent and signal Taiwan's readiness to share collective security responsibilities with the international community.
