Trinamool Rebels Defect to NCPI in West Bengal Shakeup

Twenty Trinamool Congress rebels, led by MP Arup Chakraborty, have defected to the Nationalist Citizens Party of India, aligning themselves with the National Democratic Alliance. This mass departure signals a deep fracture within West Bengal’s dominant political force, effectively challenging the leadership structure established by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Chakraborty leveled sharp criticism at the party’s hierarchy, arguing that political organizations should function through collective management rather than dynastic control. He pointed to the rising influence of Abhishek Banerjee as a primary catalyst for the internal discord, suggesting that familial pressures have compromised the transparency of party operations.

The scale of the revolt was confirmed Sunday by MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar following a meeting with Speaker Om Birla. According to Dastidar, more than two-thirds of the party members have joined the breakaway faction, and they have formally requested independent parliamentary status. The move forces a major realignment in state politics, complicating the TMC's grip on power and setting the stage for a protracted struggle over party identity and legislative influence.
