Supreme Court Rejects Meenakshi Natarajan’s Nomination Appeal

A judicial deadlock has effectively ended Meenakshi Natarajan’s Rajya Sabha bid, as the Supreme Court refused to intervene in the rejection of her nomination papers. The Congress candidate decried the ruling as a systemic threat to democratic integrity, while her party launched public protests against the Election Commission’s handling of the case.

The dispute centers on the disqualification of Natarajan’s candidacy in Madhya Pradesh due to an undisclosed pending criminal case. While her legal team, spearheaded by Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, argued that formal charges had not yet been framed against her, the court declined to interfere with the electoral process. Justices maintained that the matter must be addressed through standard election petitions in the High Court rather than via an immediate Supreme Court mandate.

Natarajan has directed sharp criticism at the Election Commission, alleging procedural bias and administrative inefficiency. She claims the Commission failed to address her grievances within a 48-hour window, effectively silencing her defense during the nomination window. In solidarity, Congress members staged a Satyagraha in New Delhi to signal their rejection of the Commission’s conduct, framing the administrative hurdle as a broader constitutional crisis.
