Supreme Court Expedites Meenakshi Natarajan Nomination Challenge

A bench of Justices PK Mishra and Atul S. Chandurkar has fast-tracked a plea from Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan, who is contesting the rejection of her Rajya Sabha nomination. Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi sought the emergency intervention after election officials disqualified her for allegedly omitting a pending criminal case.

The dispute centers on whether a mere summons, which has not yet reached the stage of judicial cognizance, mandates disclosure under the Representation of the People Act. Singhvi argues the Returning Officer acted with bias by treating an unverified summons as a disqualifying criminal record. This legal pivot follows a formal complaint lodged by the Congress party with the Election Commission, where leadership has characterized the rejection as a calculated effort to clear a path for BJP candidates to sweep the Rajya Sabha seats.

Opposition officials maintain that the nomination was handled according to established election transparency protocols. With the court now involved, the central question shifts to the technical threshold of what constitutes a 'pending case' for electoral candidates. The outcome of this hearing will determine if Natarajan can remain in the race or if the rejection stands, potentially altering the legislative math for the upcoming session.
