Alka Lamba to Appeal Conviction in Jantar Mantar Protest Case

A year of probation and a Rs 1 lakh bond: this is the sentence handed down to Congress leader Alka Lamba by the Rouse Avenue Court. While the ruling stopped short of imprisonment or fines, Lamba remains firm in her resolve to challenge the conviction linked to a July 2024 protest.

The protest, held at Jantar Mantar, centered on the Women's Reservation Bill. Following the court's decision, Lamba addressed the media to defend her three-decade political career, asserting that her actions have consistently aligned with constitutional principles. She intends to seek a reversal of the verdict in the session court to clear her record.

Her legal counsel, Aarfa Khanam, confirmed the strategy, noting that the absence of a custodial sentence does not mitigate the weight of the conviction itself. By opting for the appeals process, Lamba aims to move beyond the probation terms and fully contest the legal findings surrounding the demonstration.
